“Iuliu Haţieganu” University of Medicine and Pharmacy Cluj-Napoca (UMF Cluj) is the oldest medical Higher Education institution of Transylvania, its history goes back five centuries ago, being considered one of the most reputable university of the country. With respect to the scientific publications, the university’s scientific strength is confirmed by being ranked the first at national level, rated to the academic staff and the value in points of the impact factor in ISI journals.
As early as its foundation in 1919, the education and the research activity started blending, prominent personalities as Iuliu Haţieganu, Victor Papilian, Iuliu Moldovan, Erwin Popper, Octavian Fodor being the promoters.
The UMF Cluj is pursuing its mission to provide high quality education, training and research aimed for excellence in healthcare.
At present UMF Cluj is encouraging and supporting as well, top edge scientific research, including in-house training for a sound research career.
The large number of competition-based financed projects, some of them now closed while others still go on, stands for evidence.
Up to present, 52 projects for which UMF acted as coordinator have been financed within European and international financing programmes (e.g. RDI –national programmes: Human Resources, Ideas, Partnership, Innovation, Capacities) or Horizon 2020, FP-7.
The collaboration with the university hospitals allowed access to research in the field of clinical research and the shaping at university level of the translational research concept. During the last years, UMF Cluj-Napoca ran several projects with national, international, European financing, including structural funds. These projects have as main achievement indicators, the completion of papers for high impact factor ISI journals, a high citing level and national or European patents.
Thus, UMF Cluj-Napoca, accumulated over 2000 impact factor points from almost 1000 ISI papers, as to compare to 2007 when it only had 27 ISI papers. A sustained effort is also put to the enhancement of the EHEA’s competitiveness. With these ambitions in the one of the most globalized field as the medical one is, our university is gaining attractiveness and prestige through its degree of internationalization. One part is the fact of making the university multilingual. Besides Romanian, 3 degree programs with teaching both in English and French have been implemented. Out of a total of 8500 enrolled students, 2000 are international students who originate from 50 countries.
The University is committed to enhance its degree of internationalization both at home and across borders, through cooperation with European and non-European partners and through new initiatives. UMF Cluj is affiliated to international associations e.g.: EUA, AMEE, AUF, CIDMEF, ORPHEUS,WIN.
Part of the University, the Faculty of Medicine from Cluj-Napoca is among the first two universities in the country in results wise. It stands out through its educational offer: 4 undergraduate programs, 11 master’s programs, the doctoral school and numerous residency specializations.
The Faculty of Medicine has gradually developed its own educational structures to support the teaching activity for fundamental education. It has been greatly invested in modernizing the spaces and equipment used in the teaching process. The clinical education, offered to students and residents is provided in University hospitals, integrating lectures and bedside teaching .
The clinical education is enhanced by the Centre for Simulation and Practical Skills (http://www.umfcluj.ro/en/educatie-uk/resurse-uk/centrudesimulare-uk), a valuable recent investment. The goals achieved within the Bologna Process are pillars for future international engagement through institutional partnerships.
